US Now Denies there is any ''zone'' to speak of, leave aside ''safe zone''

Cmdr Elissa Smith, when asked whether Turkey and US indeed concluded technical details re İncirlik and there is a deal now, stated: ''we continue our dialogue with Turkey to evaluate options on the most effective means of countering ISIL.''

Turkish FM Cavuşoğlu also talked about 'safe zone' in his interview w Reuters on Monday morning. Smith, speaking on behalf of Pentagon, also denied there is any any 'zone' to speak of, leave aside there is a 'safe zone' to be agreed. 

Here is Smith's statement:
''President Obama and Turkish President Erdogan reached an understanding in their July 22 phone call to increase cooperation against ISIL under the broader counter-ISIL Coalition. Our militaries are working to implement operational elements of this understanding, with the commencement of U.S. strike missions flown out of Turkey against ISIL the most significant result thus far. As has been discussed, our military planners continue to work together to explore how we can support Syrian opposition groups on the ground to clear key territory along the Turkish-Syrian border from ISIL.  Any efforts will be jointly implemented by the counter-ISIL Coalition working with opposition groups on the ground in Syria.

Pentagon: We have no plans for a "zone."
We have no plans for a "zone." Beyond air operations, we continue our dialogue with Turkey to evaluate options on the most effective means of countering ISIL, including along on its borders, in a manner that promotes Turkey’s security and regional stability.''

State Department Spox John Kirby Denied any Agreement:
During his daily briefing, Spoxman Kirby stated that the talks with Turkey continue and there is no deal yet.

White House also denied Cavusoglu:
White House Spokesman Josh Earnest denied that Turkey and the U.S. reached an agreement. 

Upon a question during his daily press briefing on Aug. 24, Earnest said that negotiations were continuing but there was no deal yet, according to private broadcaster CNN-Türk.
